What happends if you compress the brake caliper piston w/o removing the master cylinder cap?

I forgot to remove that cap, but there was liquid leaking out of somewhere when I compressed the pistion. I've drove it around for a bit, and there seems to be no leak. Could there be something wrong, and if so then what? Brakes feel perfectly fine.
